Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay received support from her Aunt Denise as a little girl. Aunt Denise was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay quickly was captivated when she showed her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and influenced that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and raised. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of one of the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was handed she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
